The Myrtle Beach Police Department and United Way of Horry County are teaming up to cut down on panhandling in the city.
They say you'll start seeing signs around town soon promoting the new Safe Giving program.
It's designed to encourage people to take any money they might give to individual panhandlers and instead donate it to the program, where it will be distributed to local non-profits that work with the homeless community.
Blakely Roof, President and CEO of United Way of Horry County, says this will ensure any money given will make a difference in helping the homeless.
"Sometimes people want to help people in need, but they're not exactly sure how to do that," she said. "This is just a way to give specifically to organizations that are helping those exact individuals that are out there panhandling."
