Many Sandwich School District parents awoke Tuesday morning, September 21, to an email from the superintendent notifying families of a potential threat received overnight.
At 10:30 PM Monday, Superintendent Pamela Gould received a call from Sandwich Police Chief Peter Wack alerting her of a potential threat to the STEM and high schools after threatening texts were sent to a large group chat, which included students from Sandwich and other communities.
“The threat took place amidst a group text chat that included some students,” Dr. Gould wrote in her email. “The texts involved threats of violence against students in an unnamed school.”
Families were notified and the police began a thorough investigation, identifying the suspect at 1:15 AM as a 12-year-old boy living off Cape. When questioned, the boy admitted to sending the texts but was adamant they were not serious and police concluded they were not credible.
“In the end, the police are fully confident that there is no threat to STEM or the high school today and I especially want to thank Chief Wack for keeping me up-to-date throughout the night,” Dr. Gould wrote. “Having the relationship that the school has with our local police makes the job of ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff so much easier.”
