DETROIT, Mich. - The Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce did a statewide poll on issues relating to the economy, COVID-19, voting rights and the political landscape.
One question asked of the chamber voters in the survey found a majority approve of Governor Gretchen Whitmer's performance.
In May of 2021 50% approved of the governor, in September of 2021 48% approve compared to the 46% who do not approve of her performance.
The polling data found even with a rise in COVID-19 cases, Michigan voters are more concerned the economy is on the wrong track.
Here is the data when it pertains to the economy:
- 57.7% believe the economy is on the wrong track
- 85.8% are concerned about inflation
- 40.9% say the economy is on the right track
The chamber asked voters who are unvaccinated on if they will get the vaccine.
- 17.2% said they do not plan to get vaccinated
- 4.8% say they cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons
According to the poll 66% of the voters in the survey have received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.
There are 72.7% of people according to the data plan to get a booster shot when it becomes available.
“The polling shows that the last 18 months have exacerbated divisions, and finding consensus on how to best control COVID-19 and move Michigan forward has become even more challenging. That is why events where business, civic, and government leaders can convene with civility like the Mackinac Policy Conference are so critical now," said Sandy K. Baruah, president and chief executive officer of the Detroit Regional Chamber.
The chamber says they asked in the survey on if voters support or oppose allowing businesses to require proof of vaccination for employees and customers.
Here is what the data revealed:
- 44.0% would support the vaccine requirement, while 51.9% would oppose the vaccine requirement.
- 28.8% strongly support allowing the requirement. But 41.7% strongly oppose allowing the requirement.
Voters were read three different statements and asked which one most accurately reflected their position.
51.8% chose, “I believe vaccinations are an individual choice and respect the decision of people who choose not to get vaccinated."
40.2% chose, “We could end this pandemic if people just got vaccinated. I am angry that people refuse to get vaccinated and are prolonging COVID-19."
6.5% chose, “I do not believe in the COVID-19 vaccine and believe we should let nature take its course."
