The community COVID vaccination site at the Mall of America will expand its hours and capacity in an effort to boost vaccine numbers.

Gov. Tim Walz announced that starting from Wednesday, the site at the Bloomington megamall will have the capacity to deliver Pfizer 500 doses a day, and will expand its hours to 1–8 p.m., Wednesday to Friday, and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday.

Currently the site at Level 2, Southeast Court can only administer 150 doses a day and it's only open between 3–7:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Not only is the COVID-19 vaccine safe and effective, but it is also free for all Minnesotans,” said Governor Walz.

"Whether at school, at work or at home, Minnesotans roll up their sleeves every day to make a difference. If you aren’t vaccinated yet, now is the time to make a difference in the battle against COVID-19. To protect yourself and your family, get your shot as soon as possible wherever you can, including at Mall of America."

After a brief boost in August driven by the state's $100 vaccine incentives and a rise in children aged 12-17 getting vaccinated before the return of school, Minnesota's vaccination rate has one again slowed.

Minnesota administered more than 273,000 vaccine doses in August, more than the 179,000 given in July. As of September 16, there have been 125,317 doses given in September.

The latest figures show 67.9% of Minnesotans aged 12 and over – who are eligible for the vaccine – have received both their shots, and 57.4% of the total Minnesota population (which includes under 12s who can't get the vaccine yet).
