Adidas’ Inspiration? Jiminy Cricket and Mike Wazowski

Adidas is reuniting with famed sneakerhead Sean Wotherspoon—this time with the help of iconic Disney character Jiminy Cricket.

A little more than a year after collaborating on a partially recycled Superstar sneaker, the two are returning with another pair of planet-friendly kicks. Slated to drop Saturday, the Superturf Adventure SW features recycled components “throughout,” including 100 percent recycled polyester in the sockliner and insole and 20 percent recycled polyester for the upper, Adidas said.

Adidas and Wotherspoon’s latest collab incorporates Jiminy Cricket, the cartoon critter first popularized in the 1940 film “Pinocchio,” on the shoe tongue. According to Adidas, the character’s inclusion is a reference to Wotherspoon’s childhood memories of The Disneyland Resort and its recycling bins featuring Jiminy Cricket asking guests to “Recycle Please.”

The colorful Superturf Adventure SW, a new spin on Adidas’ trail-ready Response Hoverturf silhouette, features a detachable pouch that can be attached to the laces, worn around the neck or fastened to a belt loop. An apparel capsule with T-shirts and hoodies will accompany the shoe’s release.

Adidas and Wotherspoon’s latest collaboration almost certainly will not be their last. Last month, the designer posted a photo on Instagram of what looked to be a Superstar sneaker very similar to the first he designed for Adidas, except in a different colorway. The S-shaped Superearth mascot Adidas has used to promote its Wotherspoon releases also appears, pinned to the sneaker laces. “Who’s ready?! Dropping worldwide very soon!” Wotherspoon wrote.

The designer teased another design back in June. The sneaker features a ripstop nylon upper and webbed detailing. “Figured I would show you all something you won’t see for another year or so,” Wotherspoon wrote.

Jiminy Cricket is not the only Disney character with an Adidas release on Saturday.

The company plans to drop a footwear and apparel collection inspired by “Monsters, Inc” the same day. Created to celebrate the 2001 Pixar film’s 20th anniversary—and arriving just weeks after the Disney+ spinoff series “Monsters at Work” wrapped its first season—the lineup features five different sneaker designs and a line of tees and hoodies.

The footwear selection will include a green D.O.N. Issue #3 inspired by the one-eyed Mike Wazowski—the same character who starred in one of the eight Disney-themed Stan Smith sneakers Adidas released in April—as well as other character-centric takes on the Dame 7 EXTPLY, NMD and Forum. A pair of mismatched football cleats designed to match the movie’s central two characters is slated to launch Oct. 7.

On Thursday, Adidas will celebrate another anniversary—its fifth with Arizona State University and the University of Miami. To commemorate the occasion, the company plans to drop new colorways of its Ultra4D running shoes. The sneakers will sport a 4D midsole and an Ultraboost 1.0 Primeknit upper made with Primegreen, an Adidas-made fabric containing no virgin plastic.

The two colorways, each designed to match their respective school’s colors, launch exclusively via the Adidas Confirmed app in the U.S. Thursday. They will be available at select retailers globally beginning Saturday.

Just five and a half months after introducing its first Stan Smith golf silhouette, Adidas returned with another limited-edition style Monday. Releasing days ahead of the Ryder Cup, the shoe draws inspiration from the biennial competition’s host state, Wisconsin, and its slogan, “America’s Dairyland.”

“Knowing how anticipated this event would be, we wanted to do something different and unexpected,” Masun Denison, global footwear director, Adidas Golf, said in a statement. “We’ve done a few designs around this competition in the past and thought it would be fun to look at the location as a whole, not just something that focused on the two teams. This idea of America’s Dairyland kept coming back to us, so we decided to have some fun with it.”

The cow-themed design includes an all-white upper, a spotted cow print on the midsole and pink on the outsole. Special sockliners continue the spotted-print theme and include a logo of the fictitious “Dairyland Golf Club.” As with all Stan Smith Golf models, the upper is made in part with recycled materials.
