Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland are level on goals after five Bundesliga matchdays. The Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund strikers have each recorded seven goals to set the early pace in the race to become the league’s top scorer. With a long way still to go this season, it’s shaping up to be an intriguing and exciting race to see which player can score more goals.

Battle of the strikers

The consistency both players have shown so far has been impeccable. Lewandowski has scored at least one goal in every Bundesliga appearance and is the only player in the league to have scored in all five matchdays.

Haaland has failed to score in just one Bundesliga fixture thus far but has more multi-goal performances than Lewandowski. The Norwegian striker has recorded three multi-goal matches while Lewandowski has had one which was a hat-trick against Hertha Berlin.

While both players are tied at seven goals apiece, Lewandowski is leading in two other scoring statistics. The Bayern striker is scoring 1.59 goals per 90 minutes played which is a better mark than Haaland’s 1.40 goals per 90 minutes played. He also has a narrow advantage when it comes to shot conversion rate as Lewandowski is at a 35% conversion rate while Haaland’s is at a 32% conversion rate. (Stats courtesy: BBC)

The next closest players to Lewandowski and Haaland are Patrik Schick and Anthony Modeste. Schick, who was one of the leading scorers at Euro 2020, has scored four goals in five appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. Modeste of FC Koln has the exact same number of goals and appearances as Schick with the two players tied for third place.

Schick and Modeste are just ahead of a host of players at three goals each. Among those at three goals scored is Bayern’s Serge Gnabry. Other key names at three goals scored include Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst and Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

Last season’s runner-up to Lewandowski, Andre Silva, is off to a slower start this season with just one goal in five appearances. After scoring 28 goals during the 2020/21 campaign, he will certainly still be one to watch as the season continues.

Leading the top leagues

Not only are Lewandowski and Haaland leading the Bundesliga, but they are also atop the top scorer standings in Europe’s top five leagues. They hold a one-goal advantage over Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema who has scored six goals in five appearances in La Liga. Vinicius Jr. and Ciro Immobile are close behind with five goals apiece.

In terms of the race for the European Golden Boot, which includes all the top divisions of Europe, Lewandowski and Haaland are tied for tenth place. The current leader is Ohi Omoijuanfo of Molde FK. He has scored 20 goals in 17 appearances in the Norwegian top division and has 30 points in the Golden Boot standings due to the coefficient of one and a half. The Bundesliga has a coefficient of two which gives Lewandowski and Haaland 14 points in the race.
