Game notes: Detroit will try to salvage a split against the American League East leaders. The Tigers close out their final four-game series of the season with Peralta on the bump. Peralta, while never working a third time through the lineup, has been a pleasant surprise in his 15 starts. He has a 1.93 ERA through 14 innings and three starts in September.

McClanahan will likely be happy to see the Tigers after mostly pitching vs. the AL East for the past two-plus months (10 of his last 11 starts have come against division foes). His starts usually run six innings or fewer, though he has at least once this season worked three times through the lineup. McClanahan was good last time out, with five scoreless innings (three hits, three strikeouts) against the Boston Red Sox. The Rays stay home for three games with the Toronto Blue Jays while the Tigers head back to Motown for a series with the first-place Chicago White Sox — who may have an opportunity to clinch an AL Central title at Comerica Park.
