A South Carolina man was arrested after he allegedly demanded money from a Portsmouth gas station and assaulted the cashier before running off on Sunday afternoon.

Portsmouth police said the man entered the Sunoco gas station on Islington Street around 2:40 p.m., walked around the counter and made his demand before leaving the store.

The cashier suffered minor injuries but was not hospitalized.

The suspect, Richard Moore, 63, of Myrtle Beach, SC, was located by police in back of the Howard Johnson hotel parking lot on Woodbury Avenue. Moore was charged with robbery (felony), simple assault x5 (misdemeanor) and obstructing the report of a crime or injury. Moore is being held at the Rockingham County Jail on $50,000 bail.
