Pittsburgh Steelers offensive guard Trai Turner takes the field for a game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021, in Pittsburgh.

After getting ejected from Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, Steelers offensive lineman Trai Turner still may be allowed to play this week.

At least one reporter is hearing some news on T.J. Watt’s status.

We get injury updates on two important AFC quarterbacks. And ex-Pirate prospect Shane Baz makes his Major League debut with Tampa Bay.

All that in Tuesday’s “First Call.”

Turner’s temper

It doesn’t appear that Trai Turner will be suspended for spitting at a Las Vegas Raider Sunday afternoon.

The Steelers guard was ejected for spitting during an altercation in the fourth quarter.

But according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Turner will likely avoid suspension. However, he may get a fine.

After the game, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin insisted that someone spit at Turner first, which provoked his reaction.

Fingers crossed

There’s at least one hopeful report on the status of T.J. Watt.

The NFL Network is also providing an update on that front. Ian Rapoport tweeted out that he is hearing the Steelers All-Pro linebacker “has a chance to play this Sunday” versus the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Steelers managed just one sack against a shaky offensive line for the Las Vegas Raiders in the second half after Watt left the game.

Banged up Baker

According to Cleveland.com, Baker Mayfield underwent an MRI on Monday. The Browns quarterback injured his left shoulder during Sunday’s win over the Houston Texans.

Via Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns quarterback showed no structural damage. Mayfield hurt his non-throwing shoulder while trying to make a tackle on an interception.

After the 31-21 victory, Mayfield said the shoulder “kind of popped in and popped out. Nothing too serious.’’

Mayfield went 19 of 21 for 213 yards with a touchdown and that interception for a 105.0 passer rating. He was sacked twice. The Browns host Chicago next week.

Carr is questionable

In the wake of a sparkling 382-yard performance against the Steelers, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is questionable for his team’s next game against the Miami Dolphins.

On Monday, Raiders coach Jon Gruden gave Carr a “questionable” designation after an MRI on his ankle.

Carr went down during Sunday’s game after throwing a third-quarter touchdown pass to Foster Moreau.

At first, the injury looked pretty bad. But Carr never missed a play.

Shane in the Show

Shane Baz made his Major League debut Monday night for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The former Pirates first-round pick got the first start of his big league career against the Toronto Blue Jays. And he was good enough to earn a win during a 6-4 Tampa victory.

Baz allowed two earned runs on two hits over five innings, striking out five while walking none. But the two hits he allowed were both solo home runs. The first was off the bat of Teoscar Hernandez in the second inning. It was his 29th.

Then Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit his 20th in the fifth.

Baz was part of the infamous Chris Archer trade which also resulted in the Rays acquiring Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow from the Pirates.

Meadows — who sat out Monday — has 25 home runs and 100 RBIs. Prior to a season-ending injury and Tommy John surgery, Glasnow was 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 88 innings pitched.

The Rays are now 93-58. That’s the best record in the American League. They lead the A.L. East by seven games over the Boston Red Sox and 8.5 games over Toronto. Those two teams currently hold the two wild card slots.
