Coronation Street's Zeedan Nazir has revealed the real reason behind his unexpected recent return to Weatherfield.

Last week, the character arrived back in town, claiming that he was stopping by in honour of his grandmother Yasmeen's birthday. Before long, he was shocked to discover that the family restaurant, Speed Daal, is in financial trouble due to Alya (Sair Khan) having fallen for a bank scam, and offered his sister a £50,000 loan.

Tonight's double-bill (September 20) saw Zeedan (Qasim Akhtar) insist that Alya take the money. But her doubts over where he got it – and why he's around again in the first place – kept her from accepting.

After Zeedan picked a fight with Alya's ex Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) in Roy's Rolls cafe, which led to her intervening, she told him: "If you're that keen to protect me, maybe you should've come back when Geoff was trying to kill us.

"Oh, and your offer to lend us that money?" she continued. "You can shove it."

Later, Zeedan apologised, and agreed to pop round the shops to pick up some ingredients for Yasmeen (Shelley King). On his way there, though, two thugs jumped him and left him bloodied and bruised in an alleyway – where he was found by Elaine (Paula Wilcox) and Cathy (Melanie Hill).

In hospital, Alya and Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) visited Zeedan's bedside, and the latter suggested it was Ryan who orchestrated the attack. While Alya defended Ryan, Zeedan told police officer Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) that there was probably some truth to Simon's theory.

Furious, Ryan slammed Zeedan for trying to frame him when he was working all afternoon. which forced Zeedan to come clean to Yasmeen and Alya, explaining that he's left his wife Mehnaz, and her father, Hashim, has been threatening him.

"He wasn't too happy when he found out," Zeedan explained. "He said he'd kill me."

Will the Nazirs work out a way to help Zeedan before things get even worse?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
