The Mariners try to improve on their season record against the Royals

Well. That Boston series was a stone cold bummer. The Mariners will try to snatch some dignity back by not getting nearly swept again by the Royals, which will likely involve not making the foolish and arrogant choice to throw pitches anywhere in the zone to Salvador Perez, if at all avoidable.

That will be the job of Chris Flexen, as he takes the ball to start the series. The Royals are starting RHP Jon Heasley fresh from Double-A, a fastball-curveball pitcher whose raw stuff is somewhat underwhelming but who generated a lot of strikeouts with that combo this year in Double-A—many of them against the Mariners’ own Double-A team, freshly eliminated from the Texas League playoffs. Beyond the stuff, Heasley will be a challenge for the Mariners hitters simply because they have no book on him. This could be an annoying game, just to warn you.

Today’s game starts at 5:10 PT and can be found on ROOT Sports NW (TV), 710 ESPN (radio), and MLB TV (streaming) for those out-of-area.

A couple of player updates: José Marmolejos, DFA’d to make way for Jake Fraley, cleared waivers and has returned to Tacoma, where he’ll help the Rainiers in their playoff push. Also, Justin Dunn left his rehab stint in Tacoma yesterday after four pitches and is getting an MRI; he’s done for the season.
