Counterfeit dollar bills are circulating a southern Georgia county — all because of a homecoming celebration.

Now, the Hazlehurst Police Department is urging people to spread the word and to be aware of any inauthentic bills being used.

The Jeff Davis County law enforcement agency warned the community of the fake cash in a Facebook post on Monday morning (September 20). The post was complete with photos to show examples of the fake bills that are floating around. As of publication time on Monday afternoon, the Hazlehurst Police Department's post has since been shared on Facebook more than 100 times. The police department stated:

"Please be aware that during the homecoming celebration fake money was shot out of a cannon. Please spread the word. The photos show a couple of examples of the fake money used.”

Atlanta’s WSB-TV pointed out that the Hazlehurst Police Department is not alone: the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office encountered a similar issue with inauthentic cash last month. Anyone with concerns can determine whether a dollar bill is real by inspecting the microprinting, the portrait and vignette, the symbols of freedom and other telltale signs.
