STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 29-year-old Staten Island NYPD officer punched a 30-year-old man in the face after the victim confronted the off-duty cop, who drove his vehicle into a parked car, authorities allege.
Johnathan Aponte, 29, who, according to public records, lives in Mariners Harbor, was allegedly driving a black 2014 Nissan Altima near Arthur Kill Road and Arden Avenue when he backed into an unoccupied car.
The victim saw the incident occur and confronted Aponte, who then allegedly punched the man in the face, a source with knowledge of the investigation said.
When police arrived to the scene, Aponte had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, was swaying and had slurred speech, said authorities.
He told cops, “I’ve had a few drinks,” the criminal complaint alleges.
Aponte, a Patrol Borough Staten Island cop, refused to take a breathalyzer, authorities said.
Aponte was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired by the consumption of alcohol, third-degree assault and second-degree harassment, court documents show.
Police said Aponte is currently suspended from the department.
His lawyer, Mario Perez, did not immediately respond for a request to comment.
Court records indicate Aponte was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on Dec. 20.
