Cold front, storms blow through Kansas City

UPDATE, 6:20 p.m. | Power outages reported by Evergy have leveled off at approximately 1,500 customers.

UPDATE, 5:57 p.m. | There have been multiple reports of hail in Johnson County, including golf-ball size hail in Merriam, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE, 5:49 p.m. | Evergy reports more than 1,400 customers without power just before 6 p.m. Nearly half are located in western Shawnee near Kansas Highway 7 and Kansas Highway 10.

UPDATE 5:45 p.m. | The severe thunderstorm continues to move east through the metro, prompting an extension of the thunderstorm warning to include Kansas City, and Independence, Missouri.

UPDATE, 5:26 p.m. | Several viewers and agencies reported a cloud lowering around 5:15 p.m. near Interstate 435 and Kansas Highway 10. That storm has prompted a new Severe Thunderstorm Warning for portions of Johnson County, Kansas, through 6:15 p.m.

UPDATE, 5:05 p.m. | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for portions of Johnson County, Kansas through 5:30 p.m.

EARLIER | The Kansas City metropolitan area is part of an area in extreme eastern Kansas and northwest Missouri under a severe thunderstorm watch through 10 p.m. Monday.

In the NWS' latest alert, counties under watch include Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Lafayette counties in Missouri.

The department also made an alert via Twitter, where they said to look for hail, lightning and high speed winds.
