A Dallas County jury did not buy the insanity defense raised by a DeSoto man who killed his stepmother and wounded his father.

Instead, the jury convicted Robert Dixon II, 24, of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

There was never a question that 24-year old Robert Dixon was the gunman, it was only a matter of whether he was legally insane.

DeSoto Police said Dixon shot stepmother Parrish Dixon and his father Robert Dixon Sr. as they slept on May 25, 2016. Mrs. Dixon, a flight attendant for American Airlines, died of her injuries. Mr. Dixon survived but was left paralyzed.

The question of sanity came down to expert testimony. The jury believed the State’s experts and convicted Dixon of murder.

The case had an odd twist. Police noticed upside-down red crosses that had been painted on the window blinds, in what police believed to be blood.

Prosecutors and their experts argued that Dixon still had the ability to appreciate right from wrong.
