Former Fall River mayor Jaisel Correia acquitted on eight charges

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) – A judge dropped eight charges against former Fall River Mayor Jaisel Correia and will continue his sentencing Tuesday.

Correia was acquitted on six wire fraud charges and two counts of tax fraud following an hours-long debate in court. He can now only be sentenced on 15 counts, not the 21 counts he was originally found guilty for in May.

The 29-year-old was originally found guilty for 21 of the 24 federal charges he faced.

More than 500 people tuned in to the sentencing held over Zoom. Correia could be seen sitting behind his lawyers wearing a blue suit and face mask.

This is a developing story.
