The Mercedes-AMG EQS debuted a few weeks ago at the 2021 Munich Motor Show, ushing a new era of high-performance AMG electric cars. But AMG is wasting no time preparing its next electric model. Based on these spy shots, the next Mercedes EQ car getting the AMG treatment is the smaller EQE Sedan, which also debuted at Munich. Our spy photographers have spotted AMG testing a camouflaged prototype of the new high-performance EQE 53 outside its facility in Affalterbach, Germany.

Mercedes-AMG hasn't officially announced the development of a hotter EQE yet, but the prototype's ceramic brakes, gold calipers, and multi-spoke wheels wrapped in low-profile Michelin tires indicate this is no standard EQE model.

Another obvious giveaway that we're looking at a hotter AMG EQE is the larger rear trunk spoiler that almost looks like a ducktail.

Since the EQE shares the same platform as its larger sibling, it should adopt the same dual motor setup detuned to produce around 680 horsepower, slotting it below AMG EQS. With the boost function activated, the AMG EQS generates 751 hp and 752 lb-ft, enabling the electric sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds and top out at 155 mph. Like the AMG EQS, we expect the AMG EQE to get an all-wheel-drive system as standard.

Thanks to a 90-kWh battery pack, the standard EQE has a range of up to 410 miles based on the European WLTP cycle. Due to its extra performance, the AMG version will likely have a lower range.

We don't get a look inside the luxury interior, but the EQS's lavish 56-inch Hyperscreen will carry over to the EQE. When it arrives, the EQE 53 will be AMG's answer to the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan Turbo, and Audi RS e-tron GT.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but we suspect AMG will launch an even more hardcore AMG EQE 63 as an electric alternative to the combustion-powered AMG E63 Sedan. With development underway, the AMG EQE 53 should be ready to break cover early next year. We could see it debut at the 2022 Geneva Show in March.
