Chelsea Mae-Ann Atkins, 25, of Adel was arrested Sunday on a charge of assault causing bodily injury or mental illness.

An Adel woman allegedly assaulted a woman from Grimes outside an Adel convenience store Sunday night.

Chelsea Mae-Ann Atkins, 25, of 27 River Vista Dr., Adel, was charged with assault causing bodily injury or mental illness.

The incident began about 10:15 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Nile Kinnick Drive S., where officers of the Adel Police Department responded to a report of a verbal altercation in a convenience store parking lot.

In the course of the dispute, Atkins allegedly resorted to “punching” the victim “in the left side of her face near the eye and cheek,” according to court records.

The officers observed “visible redness, swelling and bruising to the victim’s face,” according to court records.

Atkins is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 11 in Dallas County District Court.

Atkins was convicted of first-offense domestic abuse assault in 2017 in Dallas County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
