Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Madi Wilson, who won gold and bronze medals with Australia at the 2020 Summer Games, contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized in Naples, Italy, the swimmer announced on social media.
Wilson, who is vaccinated, announced her diagnosis and detailed her experience Sunday on Instagram. She was in Naples to compete in an International Swimming League event when she received the test result.
"I am extremely disappointed and upset not to be racing along side my teammates in Match 8 here in the ISL," Wilson wrote. "I recently tested positive for COVID-19 and [Saturday] was moved into hospital for further care and observation.
"Even though I am double-vaccinated and took the right precaution set in place through the ISL, I have managed to fall to this virus. It's been a crazy few months, and I believe being run down physically and mentally may have made me more susceptible."
Wilson, 27, was a member of Australia's 4x100-meter freestyle women's relay team, which finished first in Tokyo. She also was on the 4x200-meter freestyle relay team, which placed third.
She was competing for the LA Current, a professional swimming team based in Los Angeles, at the ISL event.
"I feel extremely unlucky, but I do believe this is a huge wake up call, COVID is a serious thing and when it comes it hits very hard. I'd be stupid not to say I wasn't scared. I'm so lucky for all my family, friends and support people."
Wilson said she will take time off to rest and will be "ready to bounce back in no time."
