WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College is adding women’s golf and women’s softball to its slate of intercollegiate athletic programs.

“These new sports will complement our current offerings very well,” said Ethan Crawford, director of athletics and recreation. “As we begin the seventh season of sports at Hawkeye, we have had a tremendous amount of success in a very short time. We build our programs to be successful right away, and we anticipate the same for women’s golf and softball.”

Women’s golf will begin competition in fall 2022 under head coach Micah Destival and assistant coach Bill Sutton. Both are currently coaching the RedTail Men’s Golf program, which is currently in its fourth season.

"I am extremely excited to start women's golf at Hawkeye Community College,” Destival said. “It's been a lot of fun building the men's program from the start and I’m looking forward to getting to do the same for the women's program."

For women’s softball, the RedTails are hoping to hire a head coach by summer of 2022, with the first competition beginning in fall of 2023. With the addition of both programs, Hawkeye will have 15 intercollegiate programs and more than 300 student-athletes.

“The RedTails have built a substantial national reputation in just a few years,” said Dr. Todd Holcomb, president of Hawkeye Community College. “The addition of women’s golf and softball will serve to strengthen our athletic programs and provide even more opportunities for student-athletes to learn, compete, and grow.”

Scholarships will be available for both programs, and student-athletes will compete as part of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
