Syracuse, N.Y. — It looks like Destiny USA, the region’s biggest mall, will be closed on Thanksgiving once again in 2021.

“Right now, it’s looking like we will be closed on Thanksgiving,” Nikita Jankowski, Destiny director of marketing, said in an email this morning.

Destiny closed on Thanksgiving in 2020 for the first time in its history after the Covid-19 pandemic upended traditional holiday shopping plans for retailers and consumers.

Though it was closed on the holiday, the mall reopened at 6 a.m. Black Friday and the crowds did show up, especially later in the day.

A number of big chains that are major Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping destinations have already announced they also plan to stay closed for the holiday this year, including Target, Walmart, Best Buy and others.

Before the pandemic, Thanksgiving hours had become standard for most major retailers. Some opened as early as 2 p.m. and stayed open through the night. Many Walmart stores was previously open 24 hours on Thanksgiving.
