L. 22 morning news, a rainy start to the week and an impact weather day, we're keeping an eye on the commute and when we may see a break in the rain plus a mass shooting under investigation in Yemen scene not far from the shrimp festival over the weekend where police are now with this case. He obviously is the key to this case. I mean there are two huge red flags with him. He didn't report her missing and he's not helping the police and also making headlines. The FBI said to autopsy remains matching the description of a missing woman. The new clues in the disappearance of Gabby Petito as the search for her fiance also picking up, I want to thank you so much for starting your day with W. J. C. L. 22 Morning News. Rain on those rain boots. Ashley, because we're going to see a good chance for rain today is like actually just said right at the top of the show is a impact weather day and the reason for that we're gonna see some steady rain at times. Some spots isolated areas may pick up two inches, Most of us probably close to an inch throughout the day and with those downpours at times through the afternoon could see some localized flooding. There's also a flash flood watch from now up into the evening and you can see all this moisture just off the southeast coast kind of rolling in off the atlantic with its onshore flow because the steady rain over the last couple of hours down the low country, they're from a near Edisto beach also hunting island Buford all the way back toward Ridgeland, is seeing some light rain and see that from Port Royal along highway 21 definitely lots of standing water on the roads and back toward Beaufort to seeing some light rain showers forecast throughout the daytime. Just about any time today. We could see some showers, but the best time in the rain will come after lunch time. Like I said earlier. Downpour too will be possible today with all the clouds around temperatures will be held down below average. Most of us only Hello eighties this afternoon and more team coverage of this impact weather day here is a meteorologist, Melissa hall out in the rain. Yeah, Jonathan, fortunately that rain that you saw me in my last weather has subsided for the time being, but it will unfortunately probably be back today. We're gonna have those scattered showers on and off all day, heavy downpours potentially at times as well. That's going to lead us to that impact weather that we're expecting. Like I said, we've already seen some rain here in Pooler where we're starting our morning and some of that rain is still sitting on the roadways so go slow this morning. Our big concern with this impact, whether it will be that potential to hydroplane and also for some localized flooding as well. Those areas, we all know them around that don't drain very well that's gonna be a big threat. And as you look at your school based, your school day forecast. Well those kids, if they like to eat lunch outside or maybe go with their friends to pick up lunch today's not the day we look like those showers do want to increase during the afternoon hours, especially starting after lunch looking very soggy. So while you might head out the door this morning and not need that umbrella or that rain jacket that could change at times. So make sure you're prepared and get that W J C L 22 weather app. We'll let you know when those showers do start to pop up around you and we are expecting some impact totals today. One possibly even two plus inches across the area. Live and cooler for W. J. C. L 22 A meteorologist melissa hall melissa, Thank you another look now at the rainy commute this morning. Well, police say large fight led to a deadly mass shooting at a pharmacy convenience store not too far from the shrimp festival over the weekend. Police say one person is dead and seven others hurt happened at the snappy food on AMC highway at around 12 15 yesterday morning. And when police arrived on the scene, they say they found several people with gunshot wounds. They were taken to nearby hospitals and the MSC police chief tells us, investigators are interviewing several suspects. You're asked to contact police. The FBI believes are that of Gabby Petito. The remains were found in Wyoming's Grand Teton National park yesterday, potato was reported missing by her parents more than a week ago after going missing on a cross country road trip with her fiance brian laundry. Well, he returned home to florida without her laundry is a person of interest in this case. A woman says days after Gabby was last seen, she and her boyfriend picked up a hitchhiker. They now believe was laundry got out and you know he was, he was thankful and he was kind of in a hurry. So he said he was going to go across the street into the parking lot and find someone else to give you a ride laundry left his florida home Tuesday. He is believed to be camping in a wildlife preserve near his home potatoes family issued a statement saying they are grieving and thanking law enforcement for their efforts. The laundry family attorney says they are praying for Gabby and her family. You can see much more on this story on good morning America that's coming up after our show at seven 605 now and in the low country, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suspicious death after a man was found shot and killed on the side of the road. The victim is identified as 28 year old steven Platz. Deputies say they found him just after five saturday evening after they responded to a report of someone shot on Cyprus Branch road near highway 3 21. Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact police in several hospitals in our area are putting a pause on non emergency operations are Brooke Butler explains how it's all in an effort to care for more Covid 19 patients. We're the busiest we've ever been since the start of this pandemic low country and coastal Georgia hospitals still overwhelmed with covid 19 patients. About a third of our in patients are covid and most of our critical care patients are covid patients right now. At this point, chief medical officer of Beaufort Memorial kurt Gamboa says there is no end in sight for the surge in infections caused by the delta variant. I think we've been doing this for about six weeks or so. Um and I don't know what the end point is, it's just hard to read the tea leaves and no where the surge is going to end up where it's going to level off. So to ensure they don't run out of beds. Many hospitals like Evans Memorial and Beaufort Memorial are postponing elective surgeries where the patient would require post op admission. Well right now we want to reserve the beds as much as we can for our sicker patients. The non elective admissions because the census is so high and we don't want to be stuck short on beds. Some hospitals are postponing all elective surgeries. In a statement, Memorial Health said quote Memorial Health has caused all elective surgeries that can wait without being detrimental to the patient. We are looking at cases each week to determine which if any cases could be paused to allow us to better serve our patients during the search. And quote Beaver Memorial says most of their patients are still unvaccinated. So they encourage everyone who has yet to get the shot to roll up their sleeve. It definitely helps. It definitely is protective and that's what's going to really help us. Not only keep the population healthy but also to reserve our resources as if people get vaccinated, they're not coming in and using up these beds for weeks at a time. Well, two Democratic lawmakers have asked governor brian kEMP to suspend all elective surgeries across the state of Georgia. Here's a look at our case numbers in Georgia close to 6000 people testing positive Friday and in South Carolina, more than 3600 people testing positive Wednesday is the latest numbers we have from the Palmetto state. There are several chances to get your covid 19 vaccine in the low country this week today through friday. The Madonna and johnson and johnson vaccines are available at the Beaufort County Health Department on Washington street. The clinic is from a 45 in the morning to four in the afternoon. It's also available at the Bluffton Health Clinic on Bluffton Parkway at the same time. And the Jasper Health Department on Grey's Highway is offering the vaccine from 9 30 to 4 today.
