Letter: We need to stop ignoring latest COVID surge

Portsmouth Herald

Sept. 15 – To the Editor:

I don’t know what I am missing here. A year ago, if we were in the situation that we were in now, we would be in a panic. I understand and appreciate the vaccine consideration, yet I am reminded daily of friends and friends of friends that have been taken seriously ill with COVID in spite of the vaccine.

Why are we celebrating the return of Market Square Day and  the return of indoor concerts and performances as if COVID not only never happened but was waning?

In light of no mask mandates, how are we supposed to embrace the return of all the missed and anticipated events that were missing last year. Not too much has changed. What is creeping in is the reluctance to discuss, accept, and safely deal with the fact that 1,800 people died today from COVID. The fact that they were predominantly in the South only predicts what will happen in the north once windows are closed and masks are not worn. Is anyone listening?
