Syracuse football opens as touchdown underdog vs. Liberty

Expected, even if not ideal.

NCAA Football: Albany at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Opening betting lines for week four college football games popped up on Sunday, and to perhaps little surprise, the Syracuse Orange opened as a 7-point underdog against the Liberty Flames (according to VegasInsider). Depending on who you ask, that line’s already drifted to either 6.5 or 6 points that ‘Cuse will be getting at home.

On the year so far, SU is 2-1 overall and 2-1 against the spread. Liberty is 3-0 on the field and against the spread, just narrowing covering 27 points in a 45-17 win over Old Dominion last week.

As you unfortunately recall, a banged-up Orange team lost to Liberty at the Dome last year by a score of 38-21. While SU is healthier and better this year, the Flames still have Malik Willis under center, and we really haven’t seen what this Syracuse defense can (or can’t) do against a real mobile QB yet.

It’ll be interesting to see where the line moves as the week wears on. While it was just Albany, perhaps bettors are encouraged by the Orange’s 62 points on Saturday and think they’ll make it a game against the fringe top-25 Flames. But after SU scored just seven points in their last game against an FBS team (the 17-7 loss to Rutgers), there’s also a shot that the line gets bigger as belief in ‘Cuse shrinks.
