The ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Cast Reunion Was the Funniest Part of the Emmys

For an awards show that spends half its time honoring the best TV comedies of the year, the Emmys are rarely… y’know… funny. Sure, there are usually a few zingers in the opening monologue, but the pre-recorded bits are usually hit or miss (did we really need a sketch about the VP debate fly in 2021?) and the presenters usually deliver their patter with a shrug that says, “I guess we’re doing this.” That’s why the Schitt’s Creek reunion at this year’s Emmys was such an award-worthy moment. These pros knew what to do!

After sweeping the acting categories last year, the Roses—Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, and Eugene Levy—took to the stage in perfectly color-coordinated outfits. They looked like the Power Rangers of comedy, and they were definitely ready to stunt!

You know the bit was a good one because it didn’t even feel like a bit. In fact, it didn’t even feel written for the first few beats, as the quartet vamped to cover a blank teleprompter. And then Eugene Levy sheepishly revealed that he asked the writers to “lift” his dialogue a little bit, thus landing the presenters into their precarious onstage situation. It’s a very funny bit that works because these four are pure magic together. You gotta watch it.

What made the moment even better, though, were the winners of that particular category. The award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series went to the Hacks team—Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jenn Statsky. The laughs kept coming with Aniello being completely off-guard and off-the-cuff funny, and Downs seizing the moment to get laughs. It’s just a great clip all around.

So yeah—maybe get the Schitt’s Creek cast to host next year?
