Denver Falls to Washington State 2-0

The Pioneers will host CU in the Colorado Derby on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 match to Washington State on Thursday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Scoring Summary:
DEN (5-3-0):
WSU (5-1-1): Pulver 26' Broussard 66'

Quotable – Head Coach Jeff Hooker:
"I was impressed with how we started. That's such a well-coached, physical and athletic team (WSU) and we were able to play some possession soccer and took what they gave us early on, and we had some success doing it. I really thought we were going to get a goal in the first 20. I thought we slowed down the last 15 minutes of the first half, and didn't quite maintain that level we started with. I felt like if we got the first goal, we'd of been in great shape. We gave away a few balls that we shouldn't have, and they made us pay for it tonight."

First Half:
Denver's best chance of the match fell to the feet of Sami Feller in the 20th minute. Feller turned her defender a couple times on the top of the D and beat the keeper with her shot, but rattled the upper-90 of the woodwork. Natalie Beckman got on the rebound and beat her defender 10-yards off the endline, but WSU's Nadia Cooper made a diving save to her right to keep the score level.

Sydney Pulver got the visitors on the board in the 26th minute, her second tally of the season. Elyse Bennett dribbled it into the box and laid it off to Pulver, who pulled the trigger just outside the 18, putting it just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Washington State outshot Denver 9-5 in the opening 45 minutes with the visitors putting five of their nine shots on target and forcing Nerea Arrazola into three saves and a header that Brittney Lewis cleared off the line.

Feller was Denver's bright spot in the attack in the first half, taking three of Denver's five attempts on goal.

Second Half:
Denver pushed for an equalizer to start the second half, but the Cougars got their second in the 66th minute when Enzi Broussard netted her second of the campaign off a feed from MacKenzie Frimpong Ellertson, who won the ball in the press.

The Pioneers went on to create a couple chances to pull back to within a goal, but another save and a cleansheet from Cooper gave Washington State the 2-0 victory.
