5K held in East Providence Sunday to honor the life of a local doctor

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Runners competed in a 5K in East Providence to celebrate the life of a local doctor.

The Mark Palumbo Memorial University Orthopedics 5K run honors the renowned spine surgeon who passed away in September 2019.

Proceeds from Sunday’s race went towards the Tomorrow Fund which is an organization that helps children with cancer and offers support to their families.

“This is the first year of having this event renamed in honor of my father, Mark Palumbo,” Kristen Palumbo said. “My father was a renowned spine surgeon for over 20 years at University Orthopedics. He dedicated his life to helping and improving the lives of his patients. Having this race in honor of my father is important to my family because we can now work together with this community each year to keep his memory alive.”

The Palumbo family has supported The Tomorrow Fund and has held active roles with the Providence-based charity for many years.
