MLB rumors: Rockies’ Trevor Story continues teasing Yankees, others

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story will be a free agent after the season.

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Tuesday begins what could be the final home stand for Trevor Story as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

Story, a two-time All-Star, will be a free agent after the season, and it would come as no surprise if he leaves Denver after six seasons with the Rockies. But according to the Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders, Story is leaving all options on the table.

“It’s certainly a reality that those could be my last home games playing there. ... No teams are off the table. That’s kind of the way we’ve looked at it.”

Rockies interim general manager Bill Schmidt sounds just as ambivalent about the Rockies re-signing Story, telling the Denver Post, “We’ll see how things play out this offseason.”

Story is part of a bumper crop of shortstops hitting the open market this winter, which also includes the Los Angeles DodgersCorey Seager, Houston AstrosCarlos Correa and New York MetsJavier Baez.

The New York Yankees could be in the mix for a free-agent shortstop, especially after moving Gleyber Torres back to second base. But money could be a hinderance. It’s possible the Yankees don’t want to pony up a nine-figure contract for a shortstop with a pair of $300-million contracts (Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole) already on the payroll. And don’t forget right fielder Aaron Judge is due a big payday, since he has just one year of arbitration eligibility remaining.

It’s entirely possible the Yankees pass on Story and the rest of the big-ticket free-agent shortstops and come up with a short-term stopgap plan while they wait for Anthony Volpe, the top-rated prospect in the farm system, to be ready for his MLB debut.
