The death has been announced of James M. Orent, music director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra for the past 14 years and a regular performer with the Boston Pops as violinist and guest conductor.

Its chief, Keith Lockhart, described him as the ‘unofficial assistant conductor’ of the Boston Pops. Orent was 67.

He would fly his 1977 Cessna Cardinal RG aircraft to engagements across the eastern US. His violin once belonged to Arthur Fiedler’s father.

    Keith Lockhart….not James…!!!!!

  • James was a great man and colleague, a quite brilliant fellow who was welcome wherever he went. Loved and respected by all, his unexpected loss is a terrible shock. May he rest well.

  • Stephen Lord says:

No!! One of my VERY FAVORITE people from my 16 years as music director @ Boston Lyric Opera. He was always there, playing up a storm. He was so supportive musically AND personally. Oh, James, rest well and happily.
