Texas Democrats expect former Congressman from El Paso, Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke, to challenge incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in the race for governor, according to reports.
A recent poll by a local Dallas newspaper and the University of Texas at Tyler reveals that 54 percent of Texans voters feel the state is headed in the wrong direction.
Governor Abbott's approval rating is down to 45 percent after his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the Feburary winter storm, as well as the recent passing of a controversial election bill and the country's most restrictive abortion law.
The same poll shows O'Rourke trails Abbott in a hypothetical matchup for governor by a 42-37 percent margin - the closest a democratic candidate has been since Ann Richards won in 1990.
