You Guys, Jean Smart Just Won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

When it comes to funny ladies, this next category honors the best of the best.

Tonight, the 73rd annual Emmy Awards took place in downtown Los Angeles. During the ceremony, Jean Smart won the highly coveted statuette for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.

She was nominated against Aidy Bryant for Shrill, Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant, Allison Janney for Mom and Tracee Ellis Ross for Black-ish.

The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category originally made its debut in 1954. Catherine O’Hara from Schitt’s Creek won last year’s award, beating out Christina Applegate for Dead to Me, Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Linda Cardellini for Dead to Me, Issa Rae for Insecure and Ross for Black-ish.

Other previous winners include Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag, Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Louis-Dreyfus for Veep and The New Adventures of Old Christine, Melissa McCarthy for Mike & Molly, Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, Toni Collette for United States of Tara, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, America Ferrera for Ugly Betty, Felicity Huffman for Desperate Housewives, Sarah Jessica Parker for Sex and the City, Debra Messing for Will & Grace, Jennifer Aniston for Friends, Patricia Heaton for Everybody Loves Raymond, Helen Hunt for Mad About You and Candice Bergen for Murphy Brown.

Louis-Dreyfus currently holds the record for most wins in this category, with six statuettes for Veep and one for The New Adventures of Old Christine, making a total of seven.
