At El Dorado High School Sunday morning, Michael Snook rolls up his sleeves to get the shot.
"It was time to get it done," he said. "The gift card was an incentive, the line was quick and easy, so that was a plus.”
He's one of the hundreds who took advantage of a Clark County vaccine program: Get the shot, get a $100 gift card.
"This is a promotional event in our community to help increase vaccinations," said Dr. Chad Kingsley with the Southern Nevada Health District. "Turnout has been excellent."
On Saturday and Sunday, $100 gift cards were given to the first 500 people at El Dorado. It was a location chosen, says Dr. Kingsley, from being in the middle of a hard-hit COVID zip code.
This weekend's event comes as local officials are pushing and pleading for more people to get vaccinated, notice the vaccination rate has hovered at lower levels in the past few months.
But lately, Dr. Kingsley has noticed a shift.
"We’ve seen some increase from employers, starting to require it for their employees," he said. "As well as our recreation with our Raiders, seeing those things we have seen an increase because of that."
Now as of Friday, nearly 64 percent of those 12 and older statewide have at least one shot.
"We are shooting for that 80 percent," said Dr. Kingsley. "We are getting close.”
Getting closer each day with people like Magali Alvarado, who admits she got the shot because of the gift card incentive. She says programs like this are perfect for people her age.
"Younger kids when they hear that it's something that will benefit them, they get more motivation to come out and do it," she said. "It’s definitely going to make people want to come out and get it."
