In a bit of a shocking move, Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced that 2021 first round pick Fabian Lysell will likely join the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League for the 2021-22 season. Lysell was selected by the Giants in the first round of the 2020 CHL Import Draft.

The Gothenburg, Sweden native signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Bruins at the beginning of August, and the expectation was that he was going to spend the season with Lulea HF in the Swedish Hockey League. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney opted to assign him to Vancouver (WHL) in order to play against people his own age.

"It will be important for him to play against kids in his peer group. We're excited that he's going to play over here," Sweeney said. "We do believe the transition to the smaller ice surface, especially with young guys, they have to play in the hard areas of the ice in order to be successful. He's more than willing to do that, but he's got to find his space."

Lysell, 18, spent his draft year in the SHL with Lulea HF where he had three points (2 G, 1 A), eight penalty minutes and was a -3 in 26 regular season games.
