9/19/2021 3:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Panthers were able to get back in the win column in their last game of non-conference play.

The UNI women's soccer team was able to shake off a four-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon winning 2-0 against the Kansas City Roo's. Despite being slightly behind in possession and shots, the Panthers were able to get two crucial goals in the first and second halves of the game to end the non-conference portion of the season on a high note.

UNI was able to get the first shot of the game three minutes from freshman Lauren Sanders. But the Roo's would answer back with two quick shots on goal and a corner kick. Starting goalkeeper Chloe Russo was able to make both saves while the shot off the corner kick went high over the net. Senior Sophia Doty had a shot that almost went in during the 16th minute that was barely tipped out of the net by Roo's goalkeeper Mackenzie Caldwell. The teams traded shots back and forth in the middle of the 1st half until Maddie Eastus got her first goal of the season in the 36th minute. Eastus goal was assisted by Ashley Harrington for her 3rd of the season.

Kansas City got off to a hot start in the 2nd half getting a shot only 5 seconds in that was just wide to the left. The Roo's would keep the pressure on throughout the second half tallying 6 shots in the last 45 minutes. Five minutes into the second half freshman Maddie Celarek was issued a yellow card for unsporting behavior. The Panthers would have 3 more fouls in the second half but the fouls wouldn't stop UNI from adding on an insurance goal late in the game. In the 82nd minute, Doty sent a pass to sophomore Kennedy Rieken, who put the goal in the back of the upper right corner of the net.

As a team, the Panthers tallied 6 shots with 5 landing on goal, had 5 corner kicks, and drew 10 fouls. It was a balanced offensive game for UNI as 6 separate players each recorded a shot through 90 minutes. Doty, Sanders, Rieken, sophomore Lizzie Mewes, and Eastus had their shots land on goal. The Panthers also had four players in for the full 90 minutes including freshman Megan Bennington, senior Johnnie Hill, and Celarek. Goalkeeper Chloe Russo had a stellar performance in her second start in goal. Russo faced 4 shots in the shutout and played the full 90 minutes.
