Summer is almost over for CNY, with the official start of fall this week! Fall begins on Wednesday, September 22nd, at 3:20 pm for Central New York. We are going to see a big temperature change this week. From summer-like weather for the start of this week, to fall-like temperatures to end the week. Also, a soggy weather system will arrive right on the first day of fall. Let's get into it!
First, let's talk about what is considered normal for this time of year. Normally, in mid September for CNY temperatures should be in the lower 70s to near 70 degrees. However, it's going to feel more like summer to start this week. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees on Monday and Tuesday. This is almost 10 degrees warmer than normal. Then a big change in the temperatures arrives when the seasons change.
When summer officially changes to fall this Wednesday, there will be a big change in the temperature. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s on Wednesday, then drop into the upper 60s on Thursday and Friday as a cold front arrives. This is just slightly below normal for this time of year in CNY.
Now let's talk about this soggy weather system we are expecting. The weather models have some disagreement on the arrival time. An area of low pressure with a cold front attached to it will move into CNY on Wednesday. Right now, it looks like we will have mostly cloudy skies for the official start of fall on Wednesday. Scattered showers will develop late day with even a few thunderstorms possible, especially overnight and into early Thursday. Around 1-2" of total rainfall is expected by late Thursday.
