GENEVA, N.Y. - Junior
Alex Mednikova advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships, but could not get past the No. 2 seed 6-4, 6-2 despite playing well. Mednikova, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) final singles finisher, was seeded among those in Nos. 5-8.
The Round of 16 singles had three Engineers in freshman
Lorna Flores Gonzalez, junior
Rani Jones and Mednikova. Flores Gonzalez was eliminated by Anastastia Balyk of NYU 6-2, 6-1, while Jones lost in three sets to Hamilton's Hannah Apsey, who was among those seeded Nos. 5-8, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Mednikova defeated Chantel Thongphok of Skidmore 6-2, 1-0 (retired) but lost to No. 2 Dakota Fordham of NYU, 6-4, 6-2.
Facing the No. 1 seed in doubles was Flores Gonzalez and her sister
Krisia Flores Gonzalez, who lost 8-4 to Fordham & Carol Plakk. Jones & Mednikova, the No. 3 seed, lost to Aspey & Lauren Holzman of Hamilton 8-6.
Rensselaer plays its inaugural dual match of the season on Wednesday when it hosts New Paltz at 3:30pm at Sharp Courts.
