Bears never trail in scoring shootout –

SPARTA – Quarterback Stephen Swoner threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns to help lead Mt. Juliet to a 44-32 win at Region 5, 5A opponent White County High Friday.

The senior also ran for 58 yards and a score as the Golden Bears improved to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the region, headed into a Sept. 24 home game against rival Wilson Central.

Mt. Juliet wound up needing every bit of production Swoner could muster.

The Bears took the opening kickoff and drove nine plays for a Mark Shenouda 26-yard field goal with 8:04 to play in the first quarter.

Mt. Juliet tallied again with 3:53 remaining in the first on a 10-yard run by Swoner.

Following a three and out, White County punted the ball back to Mt. Juliet and four plays later Griffin Throneberry found his way into the endzone from ten yards out for a 17-0 MJHS lead with 00:26 left in the first quarter.

Following an exchange of punts, the Golden Bears took possession at midfield.

A six-play drive with most of the yardage coming from the air, Throneberry again made his way into the endzone for a four-yard touchdown run.

Up 24-0 with 7:42 left in the first half, Mt. Juliet watched White County score on three straight possessions to go into intermission down just 24-20.

White County’s Malaki Dowell capped a six-play drive as he scored from 18 yards out with 5:50 left in the half.

The Warriors recovered an onside kick and gave White County the ball near midfield.

Jayvn Strode ran for 20 yards to the Golden Bear 30 to set up Dowell’s second TD of the night from 27 yards to trim the lead to 24-13.

The Warrior defense forced a punt the ball back with 2:07 left to play in the half.

Strode broke free on a 55-yard run and put the Warriors deep into Golden Bear country at the 27.

With just 18 seconds left in the first half, Tripp Pinion found Dowell on a 22-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 24-20.

After his long TD run was called back due to a penalty, Swoner found a receiver open for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 5:04 on the clock in the third quarter for a 31-20 lead.

White County answered on their next possession as quarterback Pinion scored on a short run.

The two-point conversion was stopped short of the goaline and with 1:42 to play in the third quarter, the lead by Mt Juliet was 31-26.

Mt Juliet’s offense clicked with 9:28 left to play in the game as Swoner connected with Walter Bowers over the middle for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

The extra point by Shenouda was good as Mt Juliet extended their lead to 37-26.

White County’s Dowell broke free on the next possession and outran the MJHS defense for a 69-yard touchdown run.

The try for two again failed, leaving the score 37-32 with nine minutes left.

An onside kick was recovered by Mt. Juliet, giving the Bears possession near midfield.

The Bears kept the ball by converted on fourth down and one with 6:10 left to play in the game.

On second down and 10 at the WCHS 29 Swoner found a receiver open for touchdown strike to boost the score to 44-32 with 3:40 left in regulation.

Jaylen Holmes led Mt. Juliet with 74 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Garrison Lewis added 26 yards on six attempts while Throneberry had 24 on five attempts.

Bowers finishes with 91 yard receiving and Workings had 50 yards.

Dowell was magnificent in the loss, piling up 238 yards on 22 attempts and Strode rushed 13 times for 159 yards.

The Warriors (3-2 / 0-2) travel to North Mt. Juliet to take on Green Hill in another Region 5, 5A contest.

Bear tracks

Friday’s win over White County marked the 65th career victory for Mt. Juliet head coach Trey Perry against 32 losses — a winning percentage of ,670.

Mt Juliet has won each of the last 12 meetings — including a 10-7 decision last year.
