New Hampshire’s vaccination numbers have stalled over the last few months despite efforts from state health officials to give everyone access to the vaccine. The state’s mobile vaccine van has been making stops across the Granite State. On Sunday, it was outside of the Manchester bingo hall starting in the early afternoon. Initial efforts to get people vaccinated were successful. But now, since July, the percentage of those fully vaccinated has only crept up by 1.7%. That stagnation is similar for first doses administered. That rate pales in comparison to the number of vaccinations from March through June when the number of people fully vaccinated increased by more than 40%. Dr. Artemio Mendoza from Wentworth-Douglass Hospital said there is a lot of pushback when it comes to vaccines. For those holding out and refusing the shot, he said there does not seem to be a lot of luck changing minds. “We don’t have any problems with the people that want to be vaccinated because they’re the ones that go in, it’s the remaining percentage of people who whatever you say, you can give them data, you can give them science and for whatever reason there is, they are not going to get vaccinated,” Mendoza said. The state has several options available for people to be vaccinated. Many local pharmacies are offering vaccinations, some without the need for an appointment. State Sen. Tom Sherman, D-Rye, said vaccination rates must increase in order to fight back against another wave of school closures and restrictions. He said the message may need to come from the top."If people will not take the preventative steps that we know work with this disease, as a doctor, we need to tell them they need to go ahead and do that if they are going to participate in society," Sherman said. But, Rep. Tim Lang, R-Sanbornton, argued mandates are not the right approach for New Hampshire. "Changing dynamic and the conversation away from the vaccination and making sure that people are taking care of themselves and making decisions that are good for them and their individual rights and needs is the right way to go," he said.
