Boston College Athletics Wrap Up, Week 4: Field Hockey and Men’s Soccer Pick Up Overtime Wins

Field Hockey

The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, falling to Syracuse by a score of 3-1. The Eagles were outshot 15-7 in the game, with Syracuse getting more shots on goal (8) than BC got total shots.

The Orange scored 3 straight goals, beginning their streak early in the second period and scoring their final goal early in the third. Margo Carlin broke the shutout at 45:38 with a breakaway goal, but BC didn’t have enough time to stage a real comeback.

The Eagles had another tough game this afternoon against UNH, but ended up winning 4-3 in overtime, thanks in no small part to their 12 SOG throughout the match. Margo Carlin put BC up 1-0 at 6:12 after deflecting a Sarah Johnson shot, but UNH scored 2 straight goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Lois Lekawael scored her first goal of the season just under 4 minutes into the second half to tie the game up, redirecting a pass from Johnson into the net, only for UNH to regain the lead just about a minute later.

Fusine Govaert scored with just 21 seconds left in the game to send things into overtime, and after playing a vital role in BC’s first 2 goals, Johnson was the overtime hero with the game-winner at 66:02.

TL;DR: The Eagles are 7-1 after falling to Syracuse 3-1 and then defeating UNH 4-3 in overtime.

Football

The Eagles are 3-0 after defeating Temple by a score of 28-3 on Saturday. The Eagles did not allow the Owls to record any points until the fourth quarter, when Temple kicked a 32 yard field goal. The Eagles had more than double the passing yards than the Owls, with 187 to Temple’s 78. Dennis Grosel scored 1 rushing touchdown and 1 passing touchdown in his first game as Phil Jurkovec’s replacement at starting QB, but he completed just 5 of 13 passes total.

TL;DR: BC defeated Temple 28-3 on Saturday.

Men’s Soccer

On Tuesday, the Eagles earned a 3-2 overtime win against Holy Cross in a game that remained scoreless until 78:12. Stefan Sigurdarson opened the scoring with a header, but Holy Cross tied the game just over a minute later.

Sigurdarson regained the lead for BC under a minute later for his fifth goal of the season and second 2-goal game of the year, and this time it took just over 3 minutes for the Crusaders to tie the game up. The teams went into overtime knotted at 2, but Mike Suski scored on a penalty kick after Sigurdarson was tripped to earn BC the win.

On Friday, the Eagles fell to an undefeated Clemson team by a score of 3-0, with Clemson’s goalie stopping all 5 of BC’s shots on goal. Christian Garner made 4 saves for BC in the loss.

TL;DR: The Eagles are 3-2-1 after defeating Holy Cross 3-2 and then losing to Clemson 3-0.

Women’s Soccer

The Eagles played just 1 game this week, falling to #1 FSU by a score of 4-1. The teams were scoreless throughout the first half, but FSU scored 4 unanswered goals from 48:35 through 82:18. Linda Boama scored BC’s only goal with a penalty kick at 83:28, but it was too little too late for the Eagles.

FSU managed 16 shots on goal in the win, and Wiebke Willebrandt made an impressive 12 saves despite allowing 4 goals. The Eagles, on the other handle, only got 2 shots on goal, 1 of which was their penalty kick goal.

TL;DR: BC drops to 6-2-1 after falling to FSU 4-1.

Volleyball

This weekend, the Eagles participated in the Michigan Tournament, facing Dayton, Michigan, and Eastern Michigan. Unfortunately, after starting the year 10-1, BC now heads into ACC play on a 3 game losing streak.

On Friday morning, BC fell 3-1 to Dayton. The Eagles lost the first set 25-18, won the second set 25-17, and then lost the remaining sets 25-21 and 25-19. The second set win was BC’s only win throughout the tournament. The Eagles did lead the game in blocks (12-7), with Amaka Chukwujekwu leading all players (and tying the entire Dayton squad), with 7 blocks of her own.

On Friday evening, the Eagles lost to Michigan in straight sets of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-22. The Eagles were out-performed across the board in this matchup.

Finally, the Eagles lost to Eastern Michigan in straight sets of 25-23, 26-24, and 25-23 on Saturday, despite scoring an impressive 6 aces. The Eagles had a fairly strong game, but just were not able to come away with the win. Clare Naughton led all players with 16 kills, and Anna Murphy led the game with 3 aces.

TL;DR: The Eagles went winless this weekend, and are now 10-4 on the season.
