Saints' disaster vs Panthers summed up in one record-breaking number

In Week 1 the Saints' offense set records for efficiency. In Week 2 it set a record for futility.

Jameis Winston, Alvin Kamara and the Saints' playmakers couldn't get anything working facing relentless pressure in Carolina, finishing the day with just 128 yards of total offense. That number represents the lowest output ever in a game during the Sean Payton era -- by nearly half the length of a field.

"Offensively it's as poor as we've been in a long time around here," Payton said, "and that starts with me."

The next-lowest output came in a 176-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys in 2018, a game started by Teddy Bridgewater that the Saints actually found a way to win 12-10.

Kamara had a particularly difficult day getting things going on the ground, managing only 5 rushing yards on his 8 attempts. That output is the lowest since his rookie season, then splitting time with Mark Ingram.

Winston's 111 yards passing marked his lowest output in a start since 2017, when he managed just 67 yards on 13 attempts in a 30-10 loss to the Saints. That game also gave rise to the viral "eat a W" moment.

There's no rest for the weary, though, as the Saints hit the road again in Week 3 for a matchup with the New England Patriots.

"I've been a part of these games before ... but we can't let this game affect us heading into next week," Winston said.
