Carlson:Is this the defense of OU football fans' dreams? What if the offense is a nightmare?

Scouting West Virginia

Record: 2-1

Best player: Leddie Brown showed why he deserves a defense’s full attention in Week 3. The senior running back racked up 161 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries to help the Mountaineers defeat the Hokies, and he’ll need another strong showing against a Sooners defense that doesn’t give up anything easy on the ground.

The case for West Virginia: The Mountaineers boasted one of the best defenses in the country last season, and they showed that same prowess against Virginia Tech. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Jared Bartlett racked up three sacks, redshirt senior safety Alonzo Addae recorded 10 total tackles and the group kept Hokies quarterback Braxton Burmeister from making plays with his legs. West Virginia’s defense will give OU its toughest test yet, and the team will have a chance to win if its offense can also deliver.

The case for Oklahoma: The Sooners haven't had a complete performance against a capable team yet, but the pieces are still there. Both Eric Gray and Kennedy Brooks looked sharp against Nebraska, Jadon Haselwood got more involved in the passing game and the defense line put constant pressure on Cornhuskers quarterback Adrian Martinez. OU isn't coming into conference play in peak shape, but it should be fit enough for the challenge on Saturday.
