Patriots kicker Nick Folk sets franchise record for consecutive made field goals
New England Patriots kicker Nick Folk broke a team record by making his 32nd straight field goal attempt.Folk set the Patriots record, which was previously held by Stephen Gostkowski, by drilling a 32-yarder in the third quarter against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.The 36-year-old extended the streak to 33 by finishing a perfect 4 for 4 in Sunday's 25-6 win over the Jets. He connected on attempts from 46, 49, 32 and 26 yards away, but did miss one of two extra point attempts in the game.Gostkowski, the franchise's all-time leading scorer, made his 31 consecutive field goals over the 2014 and 2015 seasons.Folk has not missed a field goal since Week 2 of last season, when he failed to connect on a 51-yard attempt against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 20, 2020.The all-time NFL record for consecutive field goals made is 44, a mark that was set by Adam Vinatieri -- then of the Indianapolis Colts -- over the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Vinatieri played the first 10 of his 24 NFL seasons with the Patriots and won three Super Bowl titles with New England.The 14-year NFL veteran joined the Patriots as a free agent on Oct. 30, 2019, to help fill the void left by All-Pro and three-time Super Bowl champion Gostkowski, who missed most of the 2019 season with a left hip injury and was ultimately released in March 2020.In 2019, Folk made 14 of 17 field goal attempts in seven games and was a perfect nine for nine on attempts inside 40 yards.Folk was brought back for 2020 and beat out fifth-round draft pick Justin Rohrwasser for the kicking job. Folk played in all 16 games last season and made 26 of 28 field goal attempts for a career-best field-goal percentage of 92.86%.He did miss time during the 2021 preseason with an injury and ended up attempting only one field goal this preseason, connecting on an attempt from 41 yards out in the Aug. 29 preseason finale against the New York Giants.Folk was among the Patriots' final cuts on Aug. 31 while undrafted rookie Quinn Nordin made the 53-man roster. However, Folk was signed to the team's practice squad the following day and was elevated for the team's season opener against the Miami Dolphins while Nordin was inactive for that game.On Saturday, Nordin was placed on injured reserve with an abdominal injury and Folk was once again elevated from the practice squad for the Jets game.The Patriots, like all other NFL teams, are allowed to elevate a maximum of two players from their practice squad the day before their game. Teams, however, are not allowed to elevate any player from the practice squad more than twice in a season -- which means Folk can no longer be elevated from the practice squad after Sunday's game against the Jets.
