Overturned Semi In Provo Canyon Causes Short Delays But 'Not Leaking Reactive Materials'

Ben Lasseter/KPCW

A crash in the Provo Canyon sent a semi truck rolling over a guard rail and beyond train tracks beneath the road, just shy of the Provo River.

The accident was first reported just after 10 a.m. Sunday. A spokesperson for the Utah Department of Transportation said as of 11:00, the truck's trailer, which was full of the mineral lime, wasn’t leaking. Three utility trucks pulled it back up the hill and onto the road.

A trooper who responded to the crash told KPCW the truck driver walked away without injury and was the only person in the crash. The trooper said no other cars were involved in the accident, and he believed the driver was distracted while driving.

According to UDOT updates after the first report, traffic was delayed, but not by more than five minutes either direction. Though there wasn’t a time estimate, the spokesperson speculated the clean-up could last into early or mid-afternoon.

It happened just inside Wasatch County lines around mile marker 16. That’s roughly a mile east of State Route 92, which leads to the Sundance area.

Lime is non corrosive but reactive to water. Following the crash, there was no lasting damage to the road area or Provo River water, according the UDOT official.
