The "Spider-Man 2" video game is slotted to come out in 2023.

Sony’s long-awaited 2021 PlayStation Showcase arrived on Sept. 9, 2021, and it is safe to say it did not disappoint. The event revealed tons of news about some of the biggest titles coming to the PlayStation Consoles (many PS5 exclusives) in the near and distant future. The 40-minute event gave gaming fans Sony game reveals, trailers, dates and more for over 15 different games.

In less than an hour, Sony presented gamers with a lot to get excited about. These announcements contained a wide variety of gaming genres from Superhero to Racing, role-playing video games (RPG), Shooters, Indie and more. One of the standout announcements was that 20 years after BioWare’s “KOTOR” originally launched, Aspyr is remastering the acclaimed RPG “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.” Although there was no gameplay trailer, “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” is widely regarded by many as the best Star Wars game to date, so the fact it is being brought back is exciting. The game follows events that take place before the Skywalker Saga and has quickly become one of the most anticipated games from the entire list.

Another pair of announcements that has gaming fans just as excited are the two Marvel games in production by Sony’s Insomniac Game Studios in “Wolverine” and “Spider-Man 2.” Those who played Insomniac’s 2018 “Spider-Man” and 2020 “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” (the first of which is one of my favorite games of all time) will be well aware of the astounding quality and entertainment that this studio is capable of. It is hard to tell which release I am more excited for. Unfortunately, both are unlikely to be released anytime soon as “Wolverine” did not set a release date and “Spider-Man 2” is currently set to come out in 2023. For now, the news itself is enough to celebrate as both are sure to be phenomenal.

While we only saw a short teaser trailer for “Wolverine,” you can tell that the game is set to be a gritty, violent and epic adventure following everyone’s favorite ferocious X-Men. “Spider-Man 2” on the other hand gives us a lot to chew on as we get a variety of visuals and exciting reveals in the trailer. The most interesting of which was the appearance of iconic villain Venom, set to make his debut in Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe as his face is shown in terrifying fashion at the end of the trailer. While not physically shown in the trailer, many fans have theorized that one of the voices that narrate the trailer is that of comic-book villain Kraken, which would also be cool to see. Even though we will have to wait a while to know the answers to many of our questions, I am sure that it will be well worth the wait once we finally get our hands on “Spider-Man 2.”

Aside from those key headliners, there were many other gaming announcements that added to the impressive lineup that Sony presented at their showcase. Most notably, the official reveal of “God of War: Ragnarök,” which will conclude Kratos and Atreus’ story from the 2018 masterpiece “God of War,” will release sometime next year.

The only genuinely disappointing news is that the expanded and enhanced version of 2013’s “Grand Theft Auto 5” is delayed until March 2022. However, with so many other announcements of titles like “Gran Turismo 7,” “Project Eve,” “Tchia,” “Deathloop,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and more, Sony’s 2021 showcase was nothing short of a tremendous success.
