Boch Center launches on-site rapid COVID-19 testing for show guests
The Boch Center is providing on-site rapid COVID-19 testing for guests attending performances at the Wang and Shubert theatres.
On Saturday, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit played at the Wang Theatre while Manuel Turizo performed at the Shubert -- marking the first concerts hosted by either theater in over a year.
All guests of the shows had to either show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or test negative for the coronavirus before entering their respective venue.
Those who took the on-site tests paid $30 dollars to receive results within 15 to 30 minutes. Once inside, all guests had to wear a face covering.
"What we wish is that the audience would come and continue to come early before the show actually gets started, because then it will crowd up and we want to make sure that the system works the way it is," said Josiah Spaulding, president and chief executive officer of the Boch Center. "So far, it's working like a charm."
In addition, the Boch Center also debuted a new weapons security system at the Wang and Shubert theatres.
Evolv Express, created by Boston-based Evolv Technology, is a screening system that uses sensors and artificial intelligence to detect weapons on people walking without them having to empty their pockets or bags.
"It allows people to walk right into a venue without taking out any of the things they normally carry and, if they don't have a threat on them, walk right into the venue and not break stride," said Peter George, president and chief executive officer of Evolv Technology.
George says Evolv Express can screen approximately 4,000 people per hour and that the system is already in place at many other entertainment and sports venues across the country.
