The end of an era. Will be strange to watch Emmerdale without Diane. Her character was getting tired though. But over the years, she's been one of my favourites. I wish Elizabeth Estensen well in her retirement

Back when I used to watch Emmerdale more regularly, Diane was one of my favourite characters. I thought she was a great Woolpack landlady and loved her relationship with Val. I wish Elizabeth well in her retirement.

Really sad about this. Only just lost Lisa now we again lose the longest-serving actress on the show.

Funny that due to gaps the longest-serving actress will now be Nicola Wheeler. Who’d have thought?

Diane could be such a lively and fun character in her best years, yet also equally capable of heartbreak and drama. She was one of the last connections to the Sugdens, and the last semblance of the pub not being a classless, hollow enterprise. Elizabeth has likely been slowly retiring from the show for a while (as shown with leaving the pub about 5 years back), yet in that time Emmerdale has never tried to bring more older characters on to replace so many we have lost over the last decade. What a mistake.

I hope Elizabeth enjoys her retirement.

They really do need to bulk up the Sugden’s now, with only Victoria and Harry using that name. If Isobel Hodgins ever decided to leave, that would be it for the Sugden’s.

Shame about Diane leaving, but wishing Elizabeth a happy and long retirement. Hopefully Diane won’t be killed off and will be living it up in Spain

Happy retirement Elizabeth I’m old enough to remember her playing Tea Bag in the Pink Windmill, older members on here will know what I’m on about younger ones won’t.

It was mentioned on here a while ago, Colin Baker Is joining as a Love Interest for Diane, I think she will either go off with him, or she will go and live with Doug.

Older people on here remember her in her 20's as Carol in 'The Liver Birds' with Nerys Hughes as Sandra.

Her onscreen Brother Lucien was played by the late Michael Angelis who was Helen Worth's 1st Husband and Sandra's Mother Mrs. Hutchinson was played by Mollie Sugden.

    This is not true.

The show has quite a few older characters, several are newer additions, or returns after long absences:

    Eric Pollard - 76
    Kim Tate - 62
    Zak Dingle - 69
    Diane (leaving) - 74
    Rodney Blackstock - 72
    Faith Dingle - late 60s
Pear Ladderbanks (not seen for some time, but still on the books) - 83
    Brenda - 63
    Rishi - 71
    Bear Wolf - 76

The problem will always be that older actors will wish to cut back and retire. The show has a good crop of characters in their mid to late 50s; if they can keep them on the books, then they will grow naturally into older roles, as time passes.

Before I opened this thread I thought it was going to be Steve Halliwell, as any Zack scenes now, are basically just sat down ones, surely there is only so long you can do that.

Before I opened the thread I was thinking a Dingle, any Dingle. Jeez they’re superglued to the show with a law that more must be added every year 🙄

Good luck Diane. You’ll be missed for sure.

I'm suprised Rodney hasn't retired yet as he doesn't seem to do much atm apart from any scenes with Nicola and Jimmy.

Also after his ill health I would have thought Zak might have retired too.

Sad to see Diane go but it seems she gets a happy ending and at least we will still enjoy her on Classic emmerdale.
