West Ham vs. Manchester United result: Cristiano Ronaldo scores, Lingard wins it and West Ham misses penalty

Manchester United bounced back from their midweek Champions League setback and beat West Ham 2-1 in a dramatic finale that saw the Hammers fail to convert a potential 94th-minute equalizing penalty kick.

West Ham manager David Moyes controversially brought in Mark Noble off the bench just to take the penalty which was awarded after a Luke Shaw hand ball. The penalty attempt by the 34-year-old Noble was poor and he watched Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea palm it away. 

It was Manchester United sub Jesse Lingard, who came off the bench, to score a sensational winner in the 89th minute. Lingard was a fan favorite at West Ham during a brief loan spell in 2020-21 and the West Ham crowd gave him an ovation when he subbed into the match in the 73rd minute. He refrained from celebrating after he found the top right corner, unleashing a curling right-footed shot to conclude a weaving run into the box.

Cristiano Ronaldo started again and scored his fourth goal in three matches with the club. His 35th-minute goal equalized the match at 1-1 five minutes after Said Benrahma gave West Ham a lead on a shot that deflected off Raphael Varane on its way to goal.

Ronaldo was not happy that he was not awarded a penalty kick in the second half after three different incidents saw him hit the ground in the West Ham box (77th, 85th and 91st minutes). He was particularly remonstrative after the 91st-minute clash with West Ham defender Kurt Zouma. Moments later the referee would award the potential equalizing penalty to West Ham for Shaw's hand ball.

These two teams will face off again on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup (League Cup). That match is single elimination match and will be held at Old Trafford.

Final: And that's it! Manchester United come away with the win. What a finish to this one. There will be plenty of discussion about the decision from West Ham manager David Moyes to bring in Mark Noble cold off the bench to take a potential equalizing penalty. Ultimately, it was Jesse Lingard who won it on a brilliant strike: Lingard wanted to return to West Ham, where he played and had success in 2020-21, but Manchester United didn't let him go and it worked out for the Red Devils.

95th min.: West Ham subs in Mark Noble to take the penalty kick and De Gea stops it!!!

93rd min.: Penalty for West Ham! Luke Shaw with his arm oustretched blocks a cross into the box. The ref goes to the monitor for this one (he didn't go to the monitor for any of the Ronaldo incidents) and points to the spot.

91st min.: Cristiano Ronaldo goes down for the third time in this second half and this one looks closest to being a penalty, but the referee doesn't call it. Ronaldo charged at Kurt Zouma and he ultimately fell to the ground in the box. There was contact, but the ref wasn't buying it.

90th min.: Three minutes of stoppage time.

89th min.: Lingard scores against his former team! What a finish by Lingard, who needed a flash of brilliance from someone. He dribbles in the box, converges to the middle and curls an unstoppable right-footed shot into the top corner.

88th min.: West Ham brings on Manuel Lanzini for Said Benrahma in an attempt to win it late.

85th min.: Cristiano Ronaldo goes down in the box again, but now way was he getting to the ball in the box. No one is taking any late chances here.

77th min.: Now it's a PK shout for Manchester United! Cristiano Ronaldo goes down in the box after contact with Vladimir Coufal and this was borderline. Coufal stretches the leg out, but Ronaldo also takes a dive. No penalty given!

73rd min.: SUBS - Jesse Lingard comes on for Paul Pogba and receives an ovation from the West Ham crowd after playing on loan at the club in 2020-21. Jadon Sancho is also in for Mason Greenwood.

69th min.: Fans want a penalty! Tomas Soucek goes down in the box after chasing a ball with Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the referee calls the foul on the West Ham player.

68th min.: SUB - Andriy Yarmolenko comes on for Nikolas Vlasic, who made his first start.

63rd min.: There's a stop in play after Manchester United's Scott McTominay takes a Said Benrahma ball to the head. But after a couple of minutes play continues and he's ready to go.

62nd min.: Two straight corners for Manchester United but they amount to nothing. West Ham are comfortable defending deep.

57th min.: After a shaky start with uncharacteristic giveaways, West Ham has settled in and are letting Man United have the possession. The Hammers are looking for Jarrod Bowen outlet runs when they win the ball back.

51st min.: West Ham with a look! Bowen with a cross from the right and Pablo Fornals goes for the back heel flick which finishes just wide. Nikola Vlasic wanted him to leave it to him, but it was still a good attempt.

47th min.: What a chance for Ronaldo! West Ham give it away deep in their own end and the ball gets to Ronaldo, who has a point-blank shot stopped by Fabianski for a corner. No danger from the corner.

46th min.: Second half is underway. No subs on either side.

Halftime: West Ham 1, Manchester United 1

Halftime: West Ham started off strong and outside of a Bruno Fernandes shot that was tipped off the post, it comfortably held off Manchester United before breaking through first. Then Manchester United turned up the heat and Cristiano Ronaldo began to exert himself, scoring the goal and threatening on a couple of other occasions. The draw is probably the fair result for now, though Manchester United looks like the team most likely to get the next goal.

42nd min.: Ronaldo wants more. Another low, searing drive is stopped by Hammers 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Moments later on the other end, it's West Ham's Nikola Vlasic firing high on a first-time shot.

35th min.: Ronaldo scores! The Portuguese star beats the offside trap to a Bruno Fernandes and after his first flick volley is saved by Lukasz Fabianski, he knocks home the rebound for the easy finish. That's four goals in three games.

34th min.: Fantastic sliding tackle by Kurt Zouma to deny Cristiano Ronaldo's shot in the box. Scott McTominay fed a perfect ball into Ronaldo's run.

30th min.: West Ham goal! Said Benrahma gets the ball at the top of the box and his shot takes a deflection off Raphael Varane and goes into the back of the net. 1-0 West Ham.

28th min.: On the ensuing corner kick, the ball pops out to Bruno Fernandes who fires a shot in the box that is tipped by Lukasz Fabianski off the right post. And the crowd goes quiet. Moments later Luke Shaw has a shot that's saved low by Fabianski.

27th min.: Bruno Fernandes with a cross from the right and West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna is tracking Mason Greenwood's run in the box and heads it out for a Man United corner.

22nd min.: Another two chances for West Ham! Bowen with another shot that forces De Gea into a kick save. Tomas Soucek follows up with a shot on the rebound but it's high of the bar. The home crowd is fired up.

17th min.: First real chance of the match and it's West Ham's. After a Harry Maguire giveaway deep in his own end, the ball is cut back to Jarrod Bowen from the end line and his shot is blocked in the box.

15th min.: Fred sends a ball into the box looking for Bruno Fernandes, but Vladimir Coufal was tracking him and both players take a tumble. No penalty. Fernandes leaning to the left in these opening stages.

14th min.: The pattern is clear here. Manchester United keeping possession, West Ham patiently waiting and attacking the ball around midfield. Outside of a couple of corner kicks, Man United has not threatened.

6th min.:  Paul Pogba on the ground after a clash with Kurt Zouma and Pogba has to limp off the field after getting treatment. But he's back on shortly after.

3rd min.:  Vladimir Coufal escorts the ball out of play thinking it'd be a goal kick for West Ham, and it was a corner instead. Fortunately for him, nothing comes of it.

1st min.: We're off. Man United in the same blue road kits the team wore against Young Boys.

6:57 a.m.: Manchester United are currently on an incredible unbeaten run in Premier League road games: 28 matches and counting, the longest ever undefeated run. Per Sky Sports, the Red Devils have conceded just 19 goals in those 28 matches, keeping 13 clean sheets in the process. Their last loss? A 2-0 setback on January 19, 2020 vs. Liverpool.

Cristiano Ronaldo  gets the start and is likely facing a midweek rest with Uruguayan center forward Edinson Cavani  expected back for Wednesday's Carabao Cup (League Cup) match, also against West Ham.  Scott McTominay makes his return to the starting lineup alongside Fred in central midfield.

Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo are out injured, and defender Phil Jones and goalkeeper Dean Henderson are nearing a return and could be additions to the bench on Wednesday.

West Ham will be missing the suspended Michail Antonio with  Jarrod Bowen  slotting in at center forward. The likes of Angelo Ogbonna and  Vladimir Coufal  were rested in midweek, and Said Benrahma played just 38 minutes off the bench against Dinamo Zagreb. Nikola Vlasic (69 minutes in midweek) will get his first Premier League start after the abbreviated minutes he logged in Zagreb.
