Gracie Ashton lifts Fairless girls soccer; Ben Petro, Mason Tucci lead Sandy Valley football

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Ben Petro threw three touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown to help lead Sandy Valley past Tusky Central Catholic 40-14 on Saturday night.

The Cardinals built a 34-7 halftime lead and cruised to their fourth straight win. 

Petro threw for 140 yards and led Sandy Valley in rushing with 113 yards. 

Mason Tucci caught a pair of touchdown passes for the Cardinals (4-1). He also had a 75-yard touchdown run. 

Brock Smith caught a touchdown pass and Chad Davis ran for a touchdown for Sandy Valley.

Marlington, East Canton boys win team titles in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Marlington and East Canton won boys team titles at Saturday’s Boardman Spartan Cross Country Invitational. 

Noah Graham’s victory in the Division II race led the Dukes to a 37-point win over runner-up Woodridge. Graham’s time was 16:32.0. 

Marlington is ranked second in the latest Division II state coaches poll. Defending state champion Woodridge is ranked third. 

Top-ranked and defending state champion East Canton cruised to a 75-point win in the Division III race. Gabe Shilling finished third in 17:24.0 to lead the Hornets. Brylan Holland came in fourth in 17:30.1.

Central Catholic’s Ian Paul won the Division III race in 16:50.8. The Crusaders finished fifth as a team. 

Bella Graham made it a Marlington sweep with a win in the Division II girls race. Her time was 19:14.0. 

Minerva was runner-up in the Division II team standings. Hera Hoffee came in eighth in 20:32.2 to lead the Lions. 

Perry finished third, Hoover came in fourth and GlenOak was fifth in the Division I boys race. 

Hoover’s Blaze Fichter came in fourth in 16:29.3. GlenOak’s Tommy Rice finished eighth in 16:35.9. Perry’s Kyle Woods was 12th in 16:39.3.
