In the NFL, you need a great quarterback in order to contend for a Super Bowl and in the NBA, every championship-caliber team always has terrific guard play. When you look at the last handful of NBA champions, it is clear to see that the point guard position played a big role in them hanging a banner.

Last year, Giannis Antetokonumpo led the Bucks to a championship, but if it was not for Jrue Holiday’s great two-way play and ability to facilitate the offense, Milwaukee may not have been able to dig themselves out of the 0-2 hole they found themselves heading into Game 3.

LeBron James was the Lakers’ “point guard” in 2020, Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet in 2019 for the Raptors, Stephen Curry for the Warriors in 2015, 2017, and 2018, Kyrie Irving in 2016 for the Cavaliers, and the list goes on and on.

Of course, all of these past champions had star players at other positions, but without a great point guard in this league, it is very hard to win a championship.
