Last year, Grimes and Elon Musk welcomed their son and immediately set the tone for their very unique parenting philosophy by naming him X Æ A-12. Nothing says, "We're doing things our own way, tyvm," quite like a seemingly unpronounceable string of letters, symbols, and numbers that doesn't actually meet the legal requirements for a name in some places (like California, where, as a supervisor at the Department of Public Health Vital Records Office in Los Angeles explained after little X Æ A-12's birth, it’s against the law to include numbers and/or symbols in a person’s legal name).

X Æ A-12—which is pronounced either “Ecks [X] Ash [Æ] Archangel [A-12]" or "Ecks [X] Ay Eye [Æ/AI] Archangel [A-12]," depending on which of his parents you ask—is a year and four months old now and hitting new milestones like talking. It should surprise exactly no one that, now that he's starting to talk, Grimes and Elon's bundle of joy is being nontraditional about what he calls his parents (or at least his mom).

This week, in a video for Vogue documenting her getting ready process for the 2021 Met Gala, Grimes (whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher) shared some updates about X Æ A-12 and her views on motherhood in general. Specifically, motherhood (and the mom label) is weird for her.

"I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me artistically. Being a mother feels weird for me to say," she explained, adding that X seems to have picked up on her feelings about the M-word. "X says 'Claire,' but he doesn’t say 'mama.' Maybe he can sense my taste for the word 'mother'—which, I don’t even know why I have a distaste for it, I respect it. I just don't...I can’t identify with it, weirdly.”
